As there are quite a number of hair remover products and treatments available, it may take a while before you can settle on the least painful or the least expensive option. This provokes the question — what would be the best product or procedure for you?

It actually depends on the amount of unwanted hair you want removed, where you want it removed, and how much time and money you can spend on it.

Different Hair Removal Treatments

With hundreds of hair remover products available, you can get depilatories from the local drug or grocery store. Depilatory creams for the removal of excessive or unwanted hair is alkaline based. Upon application to a clean dry area, it is wiped off with a soft tissue. But this should be used after skin testing because this contains harsh chemicals that can cause burns on the delicate areas of the face.

The most common and widely used hair removal method is shaving and this is the hair remover commonly used by men. Although shaving appears ridiculously easy to do, this should be used properly and blades should be very sharp and razors disinfected before use. As much as it is easy and gives instantaneous results, hair grows back in a matter of hours.

A popular hair remover among women is waxing. The wax is heated and while warm is spread across the area where hair is to be removed. This is used on unwanted facial hair and hair on legs and arms, and the bikini area. Waxing gives better results. The skin surface feels smooth to the touch and hair re-growth is observed after three days to a week. There are several variations when using wax hair remover. If hard wax is used, there is no need to use strips to peel off the wax. Softer wax, which is commonly as facial hair removal are stripped off with waxing strips just as it is done in beauty salons. However, most individuals shy away from this procedure because it is excruciatingly painful and the result is not permanent though it takes a little longer for hair to grow back. The torturous procedure has to be repeated when hair is long enough to be waxed and that would entail waxing every other week, depending on how fast hair grows back.

Expensive laser hair removal is not a magic bullet for permanent hair removal and it is not for everyone. Those with darker skin tones are not ideal candidates for the procedure because the treated area will show up as a lighter patch of skin color. This is also not always recommended for the removal of facial hair, although there new laser procedures, also approved by the FDA, that can be used on the face. The procedure eliminates weekly waxing or daily shaving because hair does not grow fast. A once-a-month treatment will be enough.

Electrolysis uses electric current to destroy the root of the hair follicle. This should be handled by an expert, preferably a dermatologist; but it must not be expected that the procedure always assures permanent hair removal for everyone.

Hair remover gadgets such as coil hair removers and tweezers can be done by anyone but hair removal techniques such as threading and sugaring should be mastered first before it can be done safely and effectively at home.

Budget-Conscious Hair Removal Methods

Let’s face it, most humans in the Western world would rather have no hair on their bodies and faces, with the head being the clear exception. After all, baldness is not a desirable physical trait for most men as it signifies old age, an event that does not sit well in our youth-obsessed culture.

Hair removal methods are popular for this reason. But of course, no matter how hard we want to remove facial and bodily hair, we must acknowledge that we live in hard times. So, what to do? Well, apply these budget-conscious, do-it-yourself methods, of course.

Shave It, Trim It

With either a manual or electric razor, you can shave your face and many parts of your body to get rid of surface hair. Or you can use small scissors to trim hair in areas like the nose. Although this is the safest, easiest and fastest temporary hair removal method, you have to live with the side effects of the shadow of dark hairs under the skin, ingrown hairs especially in your bikini area, and skin irritations and cuts.

Melt It

Yes, you can melt hair, thanks to the so-called shaving powders that actually come in many forms like gel, lotion, creams, roll-on, aerosol and powder. The substances in these shaving powders chemically dissolve hair so that it can be scraped off more easily. However, you must take note that these substances can cause moderate skin irritation, more so on sensitive skin, because of their caustic property. Also, shaving powders can only be used on the legs and arms, not on the face unless specifically stated on the product label.

Pluck It

Using a pair of tweezers, you can pluck away at your armpit hair and eyebrows, the former to get rid of hair, the latter to shape it. Unfortunately, it can be time-consuming on larger areas like the legs, painful on the skin especially the bikini area and lead to potentially dangerous infections.

Wax It

Probably the most popular of all budget-conscious, do-it-yourself hair removal methods is waxing. This is performed by applying either hot or cold wax on the skin, allowing it to adhere a little bit, laying down a piece of porous strip of paper and then quickly pulling away said paper with the hairs in it. Although it is very effective, waxing can get messy and painful, not to mention that consistency is a difficult goal to attain. Still, if you want a smoother-looking skin especially when you want to go in a bikini, waxing is the preferred method.

No matter your reason for applying these hair removal methods, the important consideration is to balance between your need to have hairless skin and your need to protect the skin from infections.
